KRA is a founder member of two regional networks, the Greater Horn of Africa Rainwater Partnership (GHARP) and Southern and Eastern Rainwater Network (SearNet), which are effective in transfer of technology, information sharing, and collaboration and networking. KRA also hosts the GHARP Secretariat.

 

KRA strives to achieve its vision and mission through the following objectives:

 

1. Technology development and promotion: Through this focus area, KRA seeks to contribute to increased access to water and improved sanitation, climate change adaptation, enhanced food security and disposable household incomes as a basis for poverty reduction. The pillar will focus on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food security and wealth creation;
2. Capacity development: This pillar on its part focuses on improving internal structure and organizational well-being of KRA, enabling it to be a more dynamic, efficient and sustainable entity. KRA will also pursue a social enterprise orientation to support its core functions, and sustainability ambitions
3. Partnerships development, collaborations and networking: This focus area seeks to contribute to increased strategic collaborations between public, civil society and private sectors as well as among civil society organizations for integrated development support;
4. Information and knowledge management: This pillar focuses on contributing to continuous improvements in the WASH sector through research, development, improvement and generation of new technologies, best practices and innovations; and
5. Policy advocacy and influencing practice: This will mainly entail support to development and or (re)formulation of WASH policies, laws and institutional frameworks at different levels.

 

The Kenya Rain Water Association (KRA) is also a member and a secretariat to the Greater Horn of Africa Rainwater Partnership (GHARP), a regional network of National Rainwater Associations (NRWA) from the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) countries. The network was formally established in March 2001. Other current members of GHARP include: Ethiopia Rainwater Harvesting Association (ERHA); Rainwater Association of Somalia (RAAS); Rainwater Harvesting Association of Tanzania (RHAT); and Uganda Rainwater Association (URWA). The main goal of GHARP is to promote integrated RHM systems and complementary technologies for water supply, food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable livelihoods

 

Programmes

KRA has developed integrated technological packages for promoting rainwater harvesting and management (RHM) systems & complementary technologies for different target groups in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) environments of Kenya (see Figure 1). The three main target groups are pastoral communities (livestock herders), agro-pastoral communities (smallholder farmers), and primary schools (targeted as demonstration sites to educate children as change agents). These groups have different livelihood systems and challenges, and the technological packages have been developed to reflect this reality. The primary schools package is usually an integral component of the other two packages, but it can also be implemented independently. This is because schools are used as technology demonstration centres and they also target the children as future change agents – influencing current and future development agenda in a country.

Projects Implemented

The following are some of the main projects undertaken by KRA:

1. Implementation of “Scaling up of integrated rainwater harvesting and management and complementary livelihood systems in semi arid districts of Kenya” funded by the African Water Facility of the African Development Bank (AfDB/AWF) (2013-2015) - ongoing
2. Implementation of “Increasing food security and income for smallholder farmers through integrated Rainwater harvesting and management systems and complementary technologies in Makueni County” funded by Kenya Community Development Foundation 2014-2015
3. Implementation of “Kenya Horticulture Competitive Project, rainwater harvesting and Utilization in Ukambani and Coastal Region, Kenya” funded by USAID (2011-2014)
4. Implementation of “Improving Food Security, Child and Gender Based Rights in Mashuru Division, Kajiado County, Kenya” funded by Erikshjalpen (2010 – 2013)
5. Implementation of “Integrated rainwater harvesting & management systems and complementary technologies for poverty reduction and sustainable livelihoods in semi-arid districts of Kenya (i.e. Baringo, Koibatek, Laikipia East, Laikipia West, Narok North, Narok South, Nyandarua North, and Transmara)” in partnership with Skillshare International (UK), funded by European Commission (EC). Project No. ONG-PVD/2007/133-954. (2008 - 2011).
6. Implementation of the “Improved Rural Drinking Water Supply for ASAL Mwingi and Kyuso Districts, Eastern Kenya” project in collaboration with German Agro Action (GAA) and ActNow funded by EU Water Facility (2007 - 2010).
7. Implementation of “Integrated rainwater harvesting & management systems and complementary technologies for improving water supply, food security and sustainable livelihoods in semi-arid districts of Kenya (i.e. Baringo and Koibatek)” funded by UNDP-SGP & DED. 2005-2007
8. Implementation of “Promotion of rainwater management technologies in the Horn of Africa: Multi-sectoral approach towards sustainable livelihoods of pastoral communities”. Piloting of integrated rainwater harvesting & management systems for domestic, livestock and agricultural water use and watershed conservation funded by USAID/OFDA and DED in 3 semi-arid districts of Kenya, May 2004 - March 2006.
9. Implementation of “Integrated Water Resources Management for Socio-economic Development and Sustainable Livelihoods of Tungu Kabiri Community”. The UNDP-SGP funded project involved construction of a community water supply system, integrated water resources management, introduction of micro-irrigation, establishment of tree nurseries, strengthening of water users association, water catchment conservation and capacity building (2007 - 2009).
10. Implementation of “Replication of pilot project on integrated RHM systems and complementary technologies for improving the livelihoods of pastoral communities in the drought prone Baringo and Koibatek districts of Kenya”. The project was supported under the UNDP-SGP and DED funding and involved replication of the USAID and DED funded pilot project in similar ecological environments (2006-2008).
11. Implementation of “Ndeiya Karai integrated rainwater harvesting and management pilot project (i.e. roof catchment water tanks, farm ponds for micro-irrigation, agro-forestry, watershed conservation and alternative livelihood systems)” funded by DED, March 2002 - December 2004.
12. Implementation of “Strengthening regional rainwater networking mechanisms: Promoting adaptive strategies for food security in Greater Horn of Africa (GHA)”, which carried out six case studies to evaluate promising rainwater harvesting technologies in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It was funded by USAID/ISGM through PACT/MWENGO, February 2001 - June 2003.
